The Tomorrow War (2021) Movie Review: A Surprisingly Good Sci-Fi Movie

The Tomorrow War is a sci-fi film that was released in 2021. It was a surprisingly good film. The time of the movie's release is important as it is heavily based on the NSA scandal, which happened in 2020. I enjoyed the movie and would recommend it to anyone who likes to watch sci-fi.

Sci-Fi movies are usually either really good or really bad. So, when I heard that “Tomorrow War” was a sci-fi movie, I was quick to dismiss it. But then I saw the trailer and it looked pretty good. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this movie really is.

The Tomorrow War (2021) is a surprisingly good sci-fi movie. The story is set in the future where the world has been at war for decades. The movie is about a group of people who are living underground in an abandoned subway station when they are attacked by an unknown enemy.

It turns out that the attack is coming from a battle that is happening in another dimension. The Tomorrow War (2021) movie is rated PG-13 and is in theaters now.

In the pre-credits sequence, Bradley Cooper's military character is sitting alone, hand on his chin, on the field of battle and contemplating suicide. We are introduced to Bradley Cooper's character (John Donovan) and his significant other Susan (Lily Gladstone) in a forest.

Both looking rather forlorn and having a conversation that's rather dire. There's a scene where she washes the dishes, and then cuts to John having sex with a prostitute.

The scenario feels at odds with the characters' romantic development, but at least there's a sign that they're getting along, as there's been in quite a few relationships in the movies.

Cooper's character has been slated for the death penalty, and is found out to have an IQ of 210. He was executed a few weeks later.

    The Plot

The Tomorrow War (2021) is based on the serialized online sci-fi book of the same name by William C. Dietz (co-author of Ender's Game). It starts with the Federal Bioterrorism Commission dispatching a force of special forces operatives to an abandoned Siberian base called the Coldiron Academy.

Where an advanced weapon is being constructed. But it is later found that the base was operated by an offshoot of Earth's Resistance movement — the upstart extremist group opposed to the central government and claiming legitimacy for its cause.

Adrian Tello (Tom Felton) is an 18-year-old child prodigy who leads the Resistance in the event of a future war. Forced into the operation to disable the weapon, Adrian befriends Lenny, a US citizen.

    The Visuals

The film looks visually stunning and is certainly an exciting movie for all sci-fi fans out there. The film appears at its best in the sequences that involve robotic combatants fighting against each other in an all out war.

Although they are still experimenting with the colour palette of the film, the images look good enough for the most part. The background score of the film is impressive and is the best thing that Acyaka Nwankwo has ever produced.

The action sequences are kept simple, allowing the audience to make their own connection to the real-life soldiers with the combat sequences. Despite the movie being the first of its kind and being a full-blown Sci-Fi movie, The Tomorrow War doesn't delve into any explanations or reasons that make the war go on.

    What to Expect

If you think that the name Tomorrow War sounds like a decent title for a two-hour film about war, you’d be spot on. However, this interesting movie deserves to be far better than what it has been.

Well, this is what you should expect: A film about a weird future where humanity is being hunted by a group of ants that are only moving forward in their conquest.

    The Good

The director of The Good Doctor (2018), Shawn Levy, has crafted a sci-fi action-adventure that is reminiscent of the original 1985 sci-fi film, War Games. For a genre with such a hit-and-miss reputation, the world that Levy has created for The Tomorrow War (2021) is, at times, incredibly inviting.

It is a world where it would not matter if the script or execution of the storyline is the biggest flaw in the film. You just want to get lost in this world with the characters and by the end, you find yourself glued to the movie screen.

Although the screenplay is quite derivative of '80s science-fiction films like War Games and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, its characters are unique.

    The Bad

So, one of the many points of criticism directed towards The Last Jedi, was that it sucked all the air out of space. Well, if the fine folks at Dreamworks Animation have anything to say about it, you won’t have to say that about The Tomorrow War, because it sucks all the air out of the air.

It is suffocating, and it uses that technique very well. The first 10 minutes of the movie is slow. It establishes its premise, its characters, its thematic touchstone for the rest of the film, and then immediately goes into a montage of snarky sarcastic dialogue that feels like it belongs to the first half of The Great Muppet Caper.

    The Ugly

Getting Hard To Ignore The Story Tom Clancy’s The Tomorrow War is a futuristic, future-history political thriller. It’s a war where humanity’s fate rests on the winner’s ability to solve an ongoing conflict between two major factions (the remaining humans and the super intelligent robot-controlled invading alien hordes, or the opposing factions).

It’s a war where they have created new kinds of weapons that can’t be shot down by existing missiles or conventional planes. A war that is completely out of the question in the present (when governments are too paranoid to let their citizens fight each other in open war).

    The Final Verdict

The Tomorrow War (2021) Movie Final Verdict

A surprisingly good sci-fi movie that blends old sci-fi tropes with elements of X-Men with its depiction of mutants and bad guys All movies come in three shades: The Movies You Think You Want But That Might Surprise You.

The Movies You Think You Should Have Seen But That Turn Out to Be Much Better Than You Realize And The Movies That Are Just Damn Fun. And if you want to think that The Tomorrow War (2021) falls into the last category.

Then yes, it is much, much better than you think it would be. Director Robert Rodriguez is an ardent fan of the superhero movies and will be quick to blame The Avengers for the fact that the genre is losing popularity these days.

    Trailer

First things first, the music and sound design and editing of The Tomorrow War (2021) make it one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. The background score makes it feel like the movie has been shot in the future and it gives you a feel of how fast things have changed and are in the process of changing.

The audio is crisp and leaves you feeling involved. So is the editing. You feel that you are also experiencing all the things happening on-screen and want to cheer for the heroes like nobody's business.

Most of the sequences in the movie are impactful and you don't want to miss any of it. While the writer and director, Todd Strauss-Schulson, has taken on the dare of releasing a movie on Netflix, there are a few filmmakers who would find a lot to learn from him.

    Conclusion

Writer-director-producer Doug Liman is a father of four who wants to start a family. But he's married to a model and wants to continue working. He also wants to make films. So, he does. He wants to make the ultimate suspense thriller.

He knows that the "next Star Wars" or "Terminator" trilogy is on the horizon and he wants to be involved. So, he does. He wants to make a little money to pay the mortgage so he does. He wants to build a small empire and that's exactly what he does.

Liman has a habit of quickly disappearing without a trace when it comes to working on the films he's involved with. One of those films is The Wackness (2008), a film he wrote, directed, co-produced, and starred in. To make matters worse, the film earned a lowly 17 percent "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
