Check (2021) Hindi Dubbed Movie Review: A Film That Needs To Be Seen

Check is a thriller that is set in the near future. It is an adaptation of the 1997 novel "Checkers" by Malayalam writer S.L. Bhyrappa. Check is a futuristic film that deals with the concept of artificial intelligence.

I'm going to be honest with you. I judged this movie - the movie's poster - and its title. I was wrong. It was a film that needed to be seen. Check is a Hindi movie, and I'm not going to say much about its plot.

But it's a film about a young man, who's trying to make a living, and an old woman, who's trying to make sense of her life. I'm not going to say much about the film's plot.

Introduction

You have probably seen a lot of movies with a premise that seems almost too ridiculous to be true. In a way, the drama-filled Hollywood movies usually talk about real-life drama.

Whether it is the case of Roman Polanski child-r*pe case or the My Big Fat Greek Wedding theme of getting married to someone you don’t love; we find these twists and turns in almost all Hindi movies.

However, you rarely hear of similar incidents in Bollywood movies where it is about someone getting wrongly convicted for a heinous crime. Rajeshwar Singh (Akshay Kumar) is one such person who has been convicted of murder by a court in Madhya Pradesh.

Despite his innocence, he has been sentenced to Death Row and is currently serving his sentence in the same jail that has convicted him.

Enlarge this image toggle caption Ted Pecorino/Hulu Ted Pecorino/Hulu Casting and director approach can't save a premise that's too simple, heavy-handed, and rooted in straight-up racist fiction.

This is some of the worst stuff you'll see on television in quite some time. Once you realize that, however, you'll need to muster some effort to get past the fizzling, vapid morality of the moment.

This is the kind of TV show that rewards nothing but a two-paragraph write-up or a meme-worthy tweet. Brett's a white guy with an Ivy League education who kills a black homeless man on a street in Seattle, then is told by cops that he was the real killer because he was black. He's left with no alibi and no money to defend himself.

Plot Summary

Merdeka (N/A), a prison, where Ronnie Barros (Richard Roxburgh) is found guilty of murdering his girlfriend. After he is accused of the crime, Merdeka's convicting officer, Dennis (Aaron Pedros), in exchange for Ronnie's freedom, sends for his other case: an imprisoned chess player named Jack (Daniel Bernhardt) who is accused of being a drug kingpin by Dan (Noah Mills).

The only witnesses in the case are Jack's wife, Judy (Maria Bamford), and his sister, Ginny (Alexandra Pais), who believe Jack innocent. It is up to Merdeka to prove that Jack is innocent, and find out who really killed his girlfriend.

Character Analysis

Shaurya is an honest cops man who has seen hell in life. He is a deadpan straight talker who thinks before he speaks, which always puts him in a precarious position.

Lying is not a sin for him but he is a weak man who puts all his eggs in one basket. It has been learnt from him that honesty doesn’t pay in today’s world. There are no small-time criminals anymore.

However, he is a man who has integrity and honesty to the core. When a drunkard’s bones are found in the shoe shop, he is the first person who comes under suspicion of the murder.

His immediate reaction to this is to call out to someone and say, “Was he a life criminal?” Unfortunately, his quick-tempered and aggressive nature leads him to an unfortunate encounter with the prime suspect who ends up killing Shaurya’s friend.

Cinematography

Action & Adventure/Thriller. Cast Ashwin Sanghi Debutant Akhil Shroff Dulquer Salmaan Pratap Pothan Shooting Tamil and Malayalam Music Bollywood score At the end of the day, a movie is what it is. Our job is to create it to entertain our audience and to make them think.

That’s exactly what Shivam Nair’s Check (2021) is trying to do. It’s a true crime drama directed by Shibu Thameens, starring Ashwin Sanghi, Akhil Shroff, Dulquer Salmaan, Pratap Pothan and Shashank Purushothaman.

We sit in an air-conditioned theatre, surrounded by wooden benches, which gives the movie a serious retro vibe.

Chess

U/A; Comedy; Thriller Director: Joe Carnahan Cast: Donald Sutherland, Giorgia Whigham, Lukas Haas, Guillermo Diaz, Barzin Akhavan, James Le Gros, Terrence Howard Rating: Chess: In a film, in which Donald Sutherland plays a US President and Giorgia Whigham his disgraced wife, Samuel L Jackson plays his confidant, it is a delightful surprise to see a relatively unknown actress like the Lebanese actress, Barzin Akhavan making it big.

This girl knows her lines and carries off her act without missing a beat. The story of a prisoner on Death row fighting his wrongful conviction in the backdrop of Chess is beautifully told in its third act, while dealing with the character arcs of all the cast. It's not a bad thing to watch, for the issues dealt with aren't really unpleasant.

Story

A film about a convict in prison fighting his conviction that he committed a crime he did not commit in the background of Chess. What's Good The film does not try to sensationalize its story and is devoid of any cheap-shots, however it doesn't try to be too cliched either.

Like a criminal fighting against the system in the background of Chess and that too without having an IQ of 150. This is also not a film about a wrongfully-convicted-man living life in the background of Chess.

The film doesn't resort to establishing the lack of logic in the system but simply goes with the story and weaves it with the experience. Watch out for this aspect as it actually shines, as it gets right into the minds of the characters.

Conclusion

While this review cannot talk about the film as the complete story of it is contained in its 2 hrs of runtime, I would like to urge all the writers to not just watch the movie but also read the book, as it happens to be one of the best books on suspense, action and true love that I have ever read.

I am a fan of this movie not just because it is entertaining, it is a lesson in how everything does not have to make sense and things do not have to make sense.

Star Performance Avik Mukhopadhyay’s performance as the protagonist is one of the best we have seen in Indian cinema in recent times. I have not seen him play a different role like this ever before.
