Jagame Thandhiram (2021) Movie Review: A Creative And Unique Movie

Jagame Thandhiram is a Tamil comedy drama about a young man, Jagame, who is obsessed with the idea of being a hero of the masses. But he has a problem.

He’s jobless, and his father, a retired teacher, is planning to marry him off to a girl whose family he can’t stand. Jagame, out of desperation, agrees to get a job, but not in the field he wants.

He joins the crowd control team of a major company, but soon realizes that the job is much more than he bargained for. When I watched Jagame Thandhiram for the first time, I had the feeling I was watching the first Indian movie in history.

When I was a child, I was told that Indian movies were not as good as the movies in Hollywood because they weren’t as creative. I think that’s not true anymore. Jagame Thandhiram is proof of that!

There is the presence of an overbearing Dhanush, a subplot involving a young daughter-in-law, a cunning grandmother and a suspense-centric second half, but apart from that, the film is largely in control. Thandhiram is a character without a backstory.

With his face covered with a mask, and the background barely shown, Thandhiram tells his tale through flashbacks, with the first being about him when he was a boy.

As it unfolds, it becomes obvious that Thandhiram wants nothing more than to belong to a group of ‘red skinned people’, a reference to the red skinned people of his tribe.

Life changes for the man, when he meets a girl named Meenakshi (Aishwarya Lekshmi) who is his next door neighbour. Script Analysis With a mad gangster attempting to escape the clutches of some more powerful and evil gangsters, the film has one foot in a movie, another in an Indian folk tale. The cinematography is both robust and simple and adds to the brio of the film.

The sonorous background score is just what you need at the right moments. The acting is commendable. It’s Dhanush and Aishwarya Lekshmi who steal the show.

Screenplay & Direction: Santhosh Echikkanam Cast: Dhanush, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Silambarasan, Jayam Ravi, Silambarasan, Janardhanan Rating: 2.5/5 An impossible yet strangely possible situation happens at a far-flung and forgotten part of the Indian south Tamil Nadu.

There lives a group of five vagrants living by the bay, going back and forth on barges as they transport cargo from one coast to another. Jagame Thandhiram is a promising film from the creative hand of seasoned film-maker Santhosh Echikkanam who has delivered his best work with the stylish gangster-actioner 4.1 (2005) which was a big hit at the box-office.

Being a complete one-man show, it’s the talent of Santhosh who is the biggest plus point for this film.

Jagame Thandhiram (2021) Trailer

Jagame Thandhiram, with its unconventional script, is worth a watch on a rainy day. The storyline of this gangster drama is so peculiar that it immediately grabs attention. Dhanush plays a director who is scouting for an actor to play his role in a movie based on real life events.

He gets to meet a gangster Rakesh, played by Dhanush, who is seeking refuge in his film set. This unforeseen encounter brings about more complications.

Can the director help Rakesh? Dhanush's character with his edgy look and charismatic personality, is a treat to watch. The movie introduces us to a unique concept, where a movie is being filmed from the perspective of a gangster.

Conclusion

All said and done, Dhanush's Rwanda trilogy of movies has impressed one and all with the unique theme and magnificent content. And this is one feature that sets this movie apart from the rest.

It's very well-structured, seamlessly flows between the romantic and action sequences, and a few twists in the tale makes this movie the best entertainer of 2018 so far. A movie to be watched with all the family and also those who have never watched a Dhanush movie before.

Overall, this movie is worthy of being your next screen-time, and surely one that is worth checking out. 4.25/5 for this final verdict!
